Acute Pain

Acute Pain is short term pain, often less than 2-4 weeks, that results from an injury or occurs insidiously (ie. out of the blue).

 

Imagine bending over and feeling a 'tug' in your back. Over time, your back pain worsens and you're unsure of next steps. You see your Family Physician who sends you home with pain killers, muscle relaxants, and a prescription for Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy. You delay booking appointments with Physio and Massage because you're confident you will heal independently. However, your symptoms continue to fluctuate over the next few weeks and you're stuck again. You think 'How do I get rid of back pain?' and 'Will this back pain ever go away?'

This is where Physiotherapy comes in. We understand most people are busy (so are we!). We can save you precious time, money, and even help you optimize your musculoskeletal system. Most people wouldn't fix their cars or pipes by themselves right? The same goes for your body.

 

Chronic Pain

If managed inappropriately, acute pain can develop into chronic pain. This is often classified as longer than 4 weeks.

This is where it gets tricky. Many competent Physiotherapists can help you with acute pain but, most don't want to treat chronic pain. Why? Because it's difficult and has a low success rate.

​

To me, chronic pain is a challenge that I'm willing and excited to help you get rid of. Some of my most memorable patient encounters involve digging people out of chronic pain. Yes, it's painful (pun intended) but probably one of the most rewarding experiences as a Physiotherapist.
